How to Update Your NPPES Record
Under the federal rule, covered providers must tell NPPES about changes within 30 days. An old address or specialty can cause rejected claims.
The rule
The NPI rule (45 CFR 162.410) requires covered health care providers to communicate changes to their required NPPES data within 30 days of the change. Required data includes things like your name, practice location and taxonomy.
What to update
- Name changes (marriage, legal change).
- Practice location and phone number when you move or change employers.
- Specialty / taxonomy code, and which one is marked primary.
- License information.
- For organizations, the authorized official and contact details.
How
- Sign in to NPPES.
- Open your NPI record and edit the sections that changed.
- Submit. Changes usually show in the public registry soon after, and in the monthly download shortly after that.
Why it matters
Payers and credentialing teams often match claims against NPPES. A wrong specialty code or address can cause delays or rejections. And because the registry is public, an out-of-date record is what people see when they look you up here.
