How to Get an NPI Number
Applying for an NPI is free. You do it online through the CMS NPPES system, usually in one sitting.
Before you start
- Decide whether you need a Type 1 (individual) or Type 2 (organization) NPI. See the difference.
- Have your basic information ready: legal name, date of birth, practice address and phone, and your taxonomy code (your primary specialty). Find your code here.
- Have your license information if your specialty requires a state license.
The steps
- Go to NPPES, the official CMS system.
- Create a login (CMS uses an identity-verification step) and start a new NPI application.
- Enter your information and submit.
- When the application is processed, you receive your NPI. Keep it. It's yours for life.
Watch out for
- It costs nothing. Sites that charge to get you an NPI are charging for something you can do yourself for free.
- Organizations usually have an authorized official who applies for them.
- After you have an NPI, keep the record current. See how to update your NPPES record.
